MEMPHIS, TN — Police say 10-year-old boy fatally stabbed himself in the chest while his mother was beating him with an extension cord.
Police were called to an apartment last Saturday where they found 10-year-old Jaheim McKinzie suffering from a self-inflicted stab wound to the chest.
He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
His mother, Robin McKinzie, told police that she was disciplining her son by beating him with an extension cord and choking him when he got angry and grabbed a knife from the kitchen that he used to stab himself in the chest.
Neighbor say shortly before McKinzie ran outside screaming for help, she had called Jaheim inside after he was witnessed throwing rocks at the window of a vacant apartment unit.
McKinzie was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse. She is currently being held in jail on $100,000 bond. Police say their investigation is ongoing and those charges could change.
McKinzie’s family is asking that people not rush to judgment, claiming they boy had known mental health issues and had been acting out in school recently. She also said that Jaheim was suicidal and had not been taking his prescribed medication.
“She tried to take care of her son, and she tried to do it on her own,” McKinzie’s sister said. “She’s a single mother, and she did the best that she knew how … She loves her son.”
