WASHINGTON, DC – One week after getting engaged, a 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death in a random attack at a Washington, DC intersection.

The incident happened Tuesday evening as Wendy Martinez, an avid runner, was out for her routine jog. Just before 8 p.m. Martinez was attacked by an unknown male with a knife at 11th and O streets, Northwest.

Bleeding profusely from her neck, Martinez managed to stumble into a nearby Chinese restaurant for help. Surveillance footage shows her running inside the restaurant and seemed to be trying to alert customers about her attacker outside.

Some of the patrons ran out while others tried tending to the woman’s wounds until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately nothing could be done to save her and she would die from her injuries.

Authorities are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the man they say is responsible, described as a black male wearing a mustard-colored shirt, dark-colored pants, white socks and sandals.

He fled heading southbound on the 1400 block of 11th Street, NW, after attacking Martinez. A knife was recovered at the scene. Police do not have a motive, but do not believe Martinez knew the suspect and that the attack was probably random.

Police are asking you call (202) 727-9099 if you have any information about the suspect’s identity or location. A reward of $25,000 is being offered to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the suspect.

Martinez’s family released a statement that said in part:

“Wendy Karina Martinez was the light of our lives. Not only was she an avid runner, but she was a devout Christian, a wonderful friend, and a driven professional. Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend could be. She was also excited to be planning her upcoming wedding to her fiancé, Daniel Hincapie. They were engaged just last week.”

Her employer, FiscalNote, released the following statement:

“The entire FiscalNote family is shocked and deeply saddened to learn that Wendy Martinez, our Chief of Staff, was killed last night. Wendy was an invaluable member of our team and a vibrant member of the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family and friends.”
