TEMPLE, TX – Police went Hansel and Gretel Tuesday morning to nail a murder suspect, following a trail of blood that led them to a man believed to have stabbed his wife to death in their apartment.
Officers were called to the Kensington Apartments in the 400 block of Fryer’s Creek Drive in Temple shortly after midnight Tuesday to investigate a disturbance. When they arrived, they could see Autumn Alaine Reeves, 35, lying in the front room of her apartment, seriously wounded and bleeding.
They forced their way into the home and began performing CPR, but despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace G.W. Ivey. Reeves’ body has been sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy, but I’m guessing the knife holes are going to figure prominently in the cause of death.
Detectives say their initial investigation suggests that the victim and suspect were involved in a domestic disturbance when things deteriorated into a need for sharp instruments. As they began to search for evidence, they found several items with blood on them. Enough blood, in fact, for them to follow a trail that led them to a drainage ditch near the apartment complex.
In the drainage ditch, they located a bloody knife they believe to be the murder weapon. But that wasn’t all. Shortly after that, they found the victim’s husband, Royce Reeves, hiding like a spooked sewer rat in a tunnel. Coincidence? I think not.
Reeves, 56, was arrested without incident and is being held without bond on suspicion of murder charges. Gotta think it won’t be first-degree, seeing as this doesn’t appear to have been planned terribly well. Your getaway should get you a little further than the drainage tunnel under the street a few blocks from the murder scene.
