WALTHAM, MA – Looks like the only strike zone Jared Remy could find was the one on women he abused, as the son of iconic Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy was arrested Thursday, accused of stabbing his 27-year-old girlfriend to death.
Jared Remy reportedly murdered Jennifer Martel Thursday night in the couples’ apartment. He’s scheduled to be arraigned sometime today on murder and domestic assault charges with a weapon after appearing in court earlier this week for allegedly assaulting Martel.
Remy was released on personal recognizance Wednesday, a day before he killed Martel. According to a statement by Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan, the bail recommendation made by her office was based, in part, on a conversation with the victim. “The bail recommendation was based on a totality of circumstances,” Ryan said.
Police received multiple 911 calls from the Windsor Village apartment complex in Waltham around 9 p.m. Thursday night. Witnesses described seeing Remy “on top of Miss Martel stabbing her repeatedly with the knife.’’ They tried to intervene but stopped when Remy slashed at them.
Responding officers found Martel lying in a fenced-in patio behind the apartment, bleeding from multiple stab wounds. There was evidence of a struggle both inside and outside the unit, say reports. Remy was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital for an unspecified injury that was described as not self-inflicted. He is expected to appear in court later today.
Ryan told reporters that Martel’s 4-year-old daughter was home when her mother was murdered and that the child is now in the custody of the Dept. of Children and Family Services.
This morning, a large blood stain remained inside the apartment’s patio at 1203 Stearns Hill Road. Ryan said that’s where Martel was found, lying next to her daughter’s tricycle. ”It’s creepy, it’s a couple hundred yards from my window,” said one neighbor as police processed the grisly crime scene. “The little girl was literally selling lemonade the other day.”
In 2009, the Boston Globe printed an article which said that Remy and a member of the Red Sox security staff had been implicated in steroid use, a revelation that led Major League Baseball to open an investigation during the team’s 2008 pennant race. The Red Sox fired both men. Major League Baseball did not find evidence of steroid use among Red Sox players at that time, according to the Globe.
Remy denied supplying steroids to his coworker in interviews with the Globe, but did admit to having used steroids. In 2009, the newspaper described Remy as a “massively muscular man” who loved weightlifting – and who also admitted to beating up a former girlfriend in 2005.
