GERMANTOWN, MD - Police have accused a woman of stabbing her two young children to death while performing an exorcism.
Police responded to the home of 28-year-old Zakieya Avery Friday morning after neighbors called to report a car outside of her house with its door open and a knife on the sidewalk. When police arrived at the home, they forced their way inside the home after seeing blood inside the car.
Inside the home they found two of Avery’s children dead, and two of them injured. Police say 1-year-old Norell Harris and his 2-year-old sister Zyana, were both found stabbed to death in their beds. Taniya Harris, 5, and Martello Harris, 8, were alive but taken to Children’s Hospital suffering from stab wounds.
Avery tried running from the scene but was quickly apprehended. She’s been charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of attempted first degree murder. Facing the same charges is Avery’s roommate, 21-year-old Monifa Sanford. She was first admitted to the hospital before being placed in jail without bond.

According to Montgomery County police captain Marcus Jones, the deaths were the result of an exorcism. Avery and Sanford told detectives that “the devil was in the kids” and, as we all know, nothing sends the devil packing like a great fiddle player or a DIY exorcism.
I’m assuming the exorcism brought the evil spirits out of the children successfully, but the ladies didn’t have a herd of pigs nearby. Poor, poor Sanford.
This is the second story we’ve had recently involving a mother stabbing their kid to death because of demon possession. Last March, 27-year-old Danielle Slaughter stabbed her 6-year-old daughter to death with a pair of scissors because she believed the girl was possessed by the debil.
