Kentwood, MI — A 12-year-old boy is in police custody after allegedly stabbing another child at a mobile home park playground Monday.
According to police, the 9-year-old victim was stabbed once in the back with a kitchen knife and is apparently in critical condition.
Witness Glenn Stacey told a reporter from Fox 17 the 12-year-old boy approached him and asked if he could use his phone because he had just stabbed someone.
“He approached me at my house, I offered him my phone and I assumed he was calling his mother,” Stacey said. “Lo and behold he was calling 9-1-1 to say ‘I stabbed someone, please pick me up, I want to end my life.’”
Stacy went on to say the boy told him he was upset because nobody loved him and mentioned he had taken multiple pills earlier that day.
“I calmly started doing what I normally do, I didn’t want to agitate him and make sure he didn’t run away and give time for the police to actually show up, but very calmly he stood there,” Stacy added.
Police said the motive is unclear at this point, and they aren’t certain if the two boys even knew one another. Neighbors say the 12-year-old does not live in that particular mobile home community.
The boy was taken into custody, but was not immediately placed under arrest — they had to wait on his parents before they could question him.
