Thomas Linze JohnsonDALLAS, TX – Thomas Johnson, a former Texas A&M football player, has been accused of hacking a random jogger to death with a machete “because he was angry about his living conditions.”

Police say Johnson has admitted to the slaying, which was witnessed by a passing cyclist who said he saw Johnson deal six or seven blows with a machete.

“As I get closer and closer I could tell it was a machete and there are repeated blows that are occurring. As I get closer, I could see what’s being hit is a person, lying face down on the ground,” the witness said. “It was apparent to me by the time I got close that there was nothing that could be done for the person.”

The witness said he heard the killer call out to him as he passed the horrific scene, but he wasn’t about to stick around to see what he wanted.

“I heard a little bit of a yell from behind. I assume it was the guy with the machete yelling to stop,” he said. “I just kept going and I just kept going.”

The unidentified victim was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police need help identifying the victim, described as a man between 25 and 30-years-old who was not carrying any identification.

Dallas police Deputy Chief Rob Sherwin said 21-year-old Johnson admitted to killing the man and then calling 911 to report a stabbing. He has been arrested and charged with murder.

“It appears that Mr. Johnson picked this victim at random. It’s absolutely random. He just attacked him. He told our homicide detectives that he was angry about a situation and he just picked somebody to murder,” Sherwin said. “I believe there’s more to that story. It’s just very unusual. It’s quite shocking.”

Johnson made in headlines back in 2012 when he vanished from his residence on campus after a football game and was reported as a missing person. He was located three days later at his family home in Dallas, and withdrew from college and from football.

The local community is calling for the trails to be made safer with additional lighting as Johnson’s victim was the second body found in the park that day. The body of 18-year-old Zoe Hastings was found in the park just four miles away.

Her body was found in a minivan, submerged in the creek. Police say she was a victim of “obvious homicidal violence,” but that her death is not connected to Johnson.
