FORT MYERS, FL – Police have arrested 27-year-old Patrick Carlopoli after he called police to report he had just murdered his family.
Early Sunday morning, Carlopoli called 911 to report three dead bodies in his apartment. When police arrived, Carlopoli met them outside in blood splattered clothes.
“They are in there,” he said to the officers while directing them inside his apartment. As he was being detained, he allegedly stated that he had shot his wife.
Inside the master bedroom, police would find the body of Carlopoli’s girlfriend, 37-year-old Tammy Modlin, and Modlin’s 16-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Both women had been shot to death.
The couple’s 3-year-old daughter, Jeanne Carlopoli, was found nearby with the family dog. Both had been stabbed to death.
Carlopoli was taken into custody and has been charged with second-degree murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated child abuse and one count of felony animal cruelty. He is currently in the Lee County jail under no bond.
“I often tell people when I speak publicly that we’re in the business of whatever happens next,” Sheriff Mike Scott said. “And whatever happens next is many times unpredictable, unpreventable, and frankly unthinkable. The events of early Sunday morning were all of the above, with an underscore on unthinkable.”
One neighbor told reporters they felt regret that they had not spoken sooner. The claim they often saw the 3-year-old staring out the window like she needed help.
“She looked like there was something wrong,” she said. “She was always in the same pajamas, her hair was never combed. Looked dirty.”
She went on to say that she and other neighbors talked about calling someone to check on the family, but never did.
“Maybe if we had, she would still be alive.” said the neighbor.
