FONTANA, CA – A man walked into a California Target, headed to the kitchen section where he obtained a knife, then proceeded to stab himself to death.
Officials say that on Wednesday around 11 a.m., the man walked into the Target at 15272 Summit Ave. in the Falcon Ridge Town Center.
He made his way to the store’s kitchen section where he opened a package and pulled out a knife that he used to stab himself in the torso. He died at the scene.
“Upon arrival, our officers located an individual with an apparent self-inflicted stabbing wound to the torso area,” said Martha Guzman-Hurtado, police spokeswoman. “It appears that this incident is suicide.”
Target remained open for two more hours and did not close until the coroner arrived to remove the man’s dead body. This decision didn’t sit well with some people who were in the store shopping at the time of the incident.
“It’s disgusting that they would let people continue to shop when there’s a dead body inside,” said Marlene Rodriguez, who was in the store shopping until 1:30 p.m. “My stomach is churning. Why wouldn’t they clear the store out as soon as they knew what had happened?”
“I wouldn’t have gone inside if I had known there was a dead body there,” said Chris Comely, who was in the store when police responded. “I’ve suffered from depression, so this hits home with me.”
“It’s kind of scary, but it gives you the impression they don’t want to lose making money,” said Target shopper Brenda Murrell. “Because if you know somebody’s dead, a lot of times people won’t come.” Pfft. That’s about the only thing that would get me to go to a Target. Amazon Prime, bitches!
A Target corporate spokesperson said they remained open because it had been determined there was no danger to guests or team members. Besides, the section where the dead man was had been sectioned off to allow the police to investigate.
“Following that investigation, we did close the store, and the store remains closed,” he said. “We anticipate reopening soon. We appreciate the support of local law enforcement, and our thoughts are with anyone who may have been impacted.”
