VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A woman celebrating her birthday has died after being stabbed in the chest by a beach umbrella that had been caught in the wind.
According to police, 56-year-old Lottie Belk was at the beach celebrating her upcoming birthday and wedding anniversary when a beach umbrella got caught in a strong gust of wind and struck her in the chest.
“Literally you saw the umbrella go up in the air and literally it hit the woman knocking her to the side,” said one witness concerned anyone would take anything he said figuratively.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Belk suffering from life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. The state medical examiner’s office determined Belk died from penetrating blunt force trauma to the chest, and would rule her death an accident.
According to Tom Gill, the Captain of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service, he’s heard of people getting injured by loose umbrellas but this is the first time he has ever heard of someone being killed by one.
I also thought this was the first time I had ever heard of anyone being killed by an umbrella, but I was mistaken. I remembered a story from last year where a man shoved an umbrella down a woman’s throat, but he didn’t kill her. However, a quick search revealed that way back in 2007, I reported on a 22-year-old woman in Rome who was killed after a woman stabbed her in the eye with an umbrella.
