OREM, UT – A 16-year-old student stabbed five classmates inside a Mountain View High School locker room before turning the knife on himself.
It happened Tuesday morning as students were preparing for a physical education class. For reasons unknown at this time, the 16-year-old pulled out a 3-inch blade and began stabbing his classmates.
School staff reportedly boxed in the suspect, who had turned the knife on himself, until officers arrived and tased him before taking him into custody.
None of the victim’s injuries were considered life-threatening and are expected to recover. According to the last update, only four victims remained in the hospital; two in critical but stable condition, while two others are in fair condition.
The suspect has already been released from the hospital and is currently in the Slate Canyon Detention Center.
The student has not been identified and is being described as a straight-A, home-schooled student who has only been at the school since August. He has no record of disciplinary problems and no reports of bullying have been noted.
As for a motive behind the stabbing, no one knows at this point. However, the police and the suspect’s parents have stated what the motive wasn’t.
“After interviewing the suspect, victims and witnesses we believe this had nothing to do with race, religion, or ethnicity. The suspect had not been bullied by any of the victims, this was not retaliatory,” Orem police said on their Facebook page.
The boy’s parents released a statement that read:
“We express our deepest condolences to the five boys who were harmed at Mountain View High School this morning and to their families. None of the victims had done anything to harm him. This was in no way ethnically or racially motivated. We are at a loss to explain how deeply sorry we are for the pain and injury caused. Our thoughts and prayers will be with the boys and their families.”
So until the boy explains why he went Michael Myers in the high school locker room, we are free to guess, right? Lots of material to work with here. Home-schooling, the specific mentioning of race, the fact that we’ve had multiple stories regarding bullying where the school had no idea there actually was any bullying going on, and of course there’s always drugs.
So, any guesses? Winner gets nothing at all.
