PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – A teen who recently converted to Islam went on a stabbing spree at a sleepover, killing a 13-year-old boy and stabbing a mother and her teen son because he felt they were mocking his religion.
Police were called to a home early Monday morning on a report of a stabbing. When they arrived they found Eileen Simon and two boys, Jovanni Brand and Dane Bancroft – both 13 – suffering from multiple stab wounds.
They told police their attacker was 17-year-old Corey Johnson who had been at their home attending a sleepover and that he was still in the home.
A standoff ensued as Johnson barricaded himself in the home, but he eventually surrendered to SWAT and was taken into custody.
Johnson would admit that he had attacked the victims because of his religion.
He said that he planned to kill Simon, Brand, and Bancroft in their sleep because he felt Bancroft made fun of his Muslim faith that Brand idealized celebrities.
So, at around 5:45 a.m., Johnson slit Brand’s throat and stabbed him. Simon heard a commotion and went to investigate.
“Elaine heard what she believed to be Jovanni moaning and went upstairs to see what was going on,” Officer Jennifer Brashear wrote in the probable cause affidavit. “As she got to the top of the stairs, Johnson lunged at her with a knife.”
Johnson stabbed her approximately 12 times when her son, Bancroft, ran to protect her. Johnson stabbed him more than 30 times. They have both known Johnson for more than 10 years.
Bancroft and Simon were able to escape the home and run to a neighbor’s house and call 911 (and a great example of how not to talk to a 911 operator). They both remain hospitalized, but Brand died from his injuries. It was his 13th birthday.
Johnson told investigators he had planned the attack and had purchased the knife he used the day before. He also admitted to reading from the Quran before going on his stabbing spree “to give him courage.”
Reports also say Johnson often watched violent videos involving Muslim jihadists on the Internet and that the FBI already had their eye on him. Johnson is currently being held on one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
