Oak Lawn, IL – We’ve featured so many murdered babies over the years that I’ve lost count. But this story out of Illinois comes complete with a mental image that will stick with me for as long as the “My Daddy Ate My Eyes Out” story has.
Police say 62-year-old Alfreda Giedrojc used a sledgehammer to bash in her 6-month-old granddaughter’s head before using a knife to slit the baby’s throat.
It happened on Sunday morning, after Giedrojc’s son-in-law left his 6-month-old daughter, Vivian Summers, in his parents-in-law’s home. He and Giedrojc’s husband then left the home to work on a rehab project across the street, leaving Giedrojc alone with Vivian.
Once everyone was out of the house, Giedrojc picked Vivian up off of the couch where she was sleeping, and placed her on the floor. She then went to a closet to retrieve a sledgehammer she’d placed the night before, and then used it to repeatedly hit the infant in the head.
When Vivian would not stop moving and crying, Giedrojc grabbed a knife from the kitchen. Then, while holding Vivian, she slit the baby’s throat. Giedrojc’s husband called 911 after returning home and finding what his wife had done. The baby was taken to the hospital, but had already died from blunt trauma to the head and an inch-sized wound to her neck.
After her arrest, Cook County Assistant Prosecutor Mike Deno said that Giedrojc admitted to using a sledgehammer and a knife to kill her granddaughter. He would not discuss a possible motive for the murder or if Giedrojc had been evaluated for mental illness. She does not have a criminal history.
Giedrojc is currently in jail on a charge of first-degree murder. On Monday, Judge Kerry M. Kennedy ordered her to be held without bail. Giedrojc is due back in court on October 28, 2013.
While I have no doubt that some form of mental illness was at play here, I am also very familiar with Polish mothers. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the motive turned out to be that Giedrojc was mad at her son-in-law because of something he did to her daughter. No offense to any Polish readers, but yo’ mamas can be a tad psychotic.
