WAUKESHA, WI – Police have charged Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12, with attempted first-degree intentional homicide after they lured a 12-year-old classmate into the woods and stabbed her 19 times with a kitchen knife.
Investigators say the two girls had planned the attack for months, all in an attempt to impress Slenderman, a fictional character the girls read about on the horror story website Creepypasta Wiki. One of the suspects told police that in order to be with Slenderman, you had to kill someone.
That someone turned out to be one of their friends, who they invited to a sleepover. They were going to duct tape her mouth while she slept and stab her in the neck, but figured it would be too messy. They then decided to kill her in a bathroom where a floor drain would make cleanup easier.
They opted do neither, and waited to attack the girl the next day while playing hide-in-seek in the woods of a nearby park. “One suspect held the victim down while the other suspect stabbed her 19 times in the arms, legs and torso,” Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack said.
After they were done, the two girls left the victim in the woods. Surprisingly, despite having sustained several stab wounds to major organs, the victim was able to crawl out of the woods and flag down a passing bicyclist. “Please help me. I’ve been stabbed,” she said. The cyclist called 911, and police began searching for the two girls.
They were taken into custody a short time later after a sheriff’s officer found them walking near Interstate 94. “There was evidence that was readily apparent when the two were taken into custody,” Jack told reporters. One piece of evidence included a large kitchen knife found inside a purse. The girls spoke readily to police when interviewed and explained the motive behind the attack they’d planned since February.
According to the criminal complaint, Weier stated that “many people do not believe Slenderman is real,” and she “wanted to prove the skeptics wrong.” Their goal may have been to become a “proxy of Slender”, which required the girls to “physically kill someone,” the complaint says.
Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier have been charged as adults and ordered held $500,000 bail each. If convicted, they could face 65 years in prison. The victim is in stable condition at at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
