PONTIAC, MI – Police have charged 65-year-old Sylvia Majewska with the murder of her adult son and infant granddaughter.
Last month, police performing a welfare check found 29-year-old Daryne Gaily and his daughter, 7-month-old Charley Hendrick dead inside Gaily’s home. Gailey’s throat had been slashed and Charley died from blunt force trauma to her head. A boxcutter was found at the scene.
Gailey’s mother, Sylvia Majewska, was also found injured in the home and was transported to the hospital. The baby’s mother had initially called police when she wasn’t returned to her on Saturday as planned. She told police she and Gailey were in the process of a divorce.
As a courtesy, officials checked Gaily’s home but did not find anyone there. The body of Gaily and his daughter were not discovered until Sunday after Gaily’s father called police asking for a welfare check be performed as it was unusual for him not to hear from his son.
Yesterday police charged Majewska with two counts of premeditated first degree murder, alleging she planned the murder of her own son and granddaughter. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said during a news conference that the woman had then planned to kill herself.
“For whatever reason she came to the conclusion that the son and the child would be better off if they weren’t alive, sadly,” said Bouchard.
Majewska must have found it’s a lot easier to bash in a baby’s skull than it was to kill herself as she remains in the hospital under police guard. Her preliminary examination is scheduled for Dec. 18.
