WELLINGTON, KS
– Police have arrested 33-year-old Lindsey Blansett after she allegedly beat and stabbed her son to death because he “would be better off in Heaven.

On Sunday night, police say Blansett went into her 10-year-old son’s bedroom while he was sleeping. She allegedly hit the boy with a rock before using a knife to stab him several times in the chest. She then called 911.

A portion of the 911 call can be heard here, but here’s an excerpt.

Blansett: Hi, this is Nicole Blansett. I just stabbed my son.
Dispatch: I’m sorry?
Blansett: I just stabbed my son. I thought somebody was coming in to get us.
Dispatch: Is he still conscious?
Blansett: No
Dispatch: Where’d you stab him at?
Blansett: In the chest, Several times. I thought somebody was coming in.

Police responded to the home just before midnight and found the boy dead and Blansett still inside the home. A 9-year-old girl was also in the home but was not harmed. Blansett was taken into custody and later charged with murder in the first degree.

According to the formal complaint, Blansett “intentionally and with premeditation” killed her son, Caleb Blansett, because she “decided the boy would be better off in heaven than to face the world’s problems.”

If she is convicted of the charge, she is facing a possible life behind bars. Blansett is being held at the Sumner County Jail on $500,000 bond. The girl has since been placed with family members.

DCF says they were aware of the family, having investigated a report of neglect in 2012 and receiving several reports in 2014. The latest was less than a week before Blansett killed her son. DCF assigned a “non-abuse/neglect” report and found that the case warranted further investigation.

They were a little too late, it seems.
