MADISON, WI – Matthew Skalitzky, 40, has been arrested after he used a 4-foot sword to stab and decapitate his 68-year-old mother.
Matthew Skalitzky spent the night at his parents, Jane and Joseph Skalitzky, and ate breakfast with them the following morning.
At around 11:30 a.m. he told his parents that he was ready to go home so his mother offered to drive him the 4-miles to the townhouse he shared with a roommate.
The roommate, who has not been named, recalls Jane being friendly and greeting him before going upstairs with Matthew, who seemed “distant and unemotional.” Within 10 to 15 minutes, the roommate heard “stomping noises” upstairs and went to investigate.
On his way up the stairs he says he heard Jane yelling, “No, no, no!” When he reached Matthew and Jane he found Matthew holding a 4-foot sword over the headless body of his mother. Jane’s hands were also wounded, which I assume was the result of Jane trying to defend herself.
The roommate moved towards Matthew, who surrendered the bloodied sword to him, then lead Matthew to the couch as if he were a child. He directed Matthew to stay on the couch and walked outside to call 911, leaving the sword on the porch. Once during the call, Matthew came out of the house but was told to go back inside which he complied with.
Police entered the townhouse and were met with Matthew coming down the stairs covered in a significant amount of blood. When asked if he killed his mother he acknowledged, “Yes, but she’s not my real mother.” He was taken into custody and transferred into custody where he will be processed and is awaiting a mental health evaluation.
Joseph Skalitzky, Matthew’s father recalls his son seeming agitated and anxious during breakfast. He also stated that his son had recently re-started taking medication two days earlier for an undisclosed mental illness. Matthew had stopped taking them after reading negative comments about them online.
A funeral has been scheduled for Jane, who was retired after a 30-year career as a special education teacher in Sun Prairie School District.
