SIMPSONVILLE, SC – Police have taken a 13-year-old boy into custody after his mother, 44-year-old Isabel Zuluaga, was found stabbed to death in their home.
A contractor who arrived at Zuluaga’s home Tuesday morning is the one who called 911 after finding the woman dead inside.
He said that when no one answered the door for him he went under home’s crawlspace to start working and found Zuluaga’s son hiding under the house.
After telling the boy to leave so he could start working he noticed blood dripping from above, through the floorboards. That’s when the contractor went inside the home and found Zuluaga dead from multiple stab wounds to the torso.
Police would take the teen into custody a few hours later after he was found walking near a highway. According to Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis, the teen admitted to killing his mother the night before and then going to sleep.
“When the contractor came it startled him because apparently he did not realize a contractor was coming,” said Loftis. “So he went under the crawl space to hide because he did not know who was knocking at the door.”
The teen is currently in custody while a Family Court judge determines if he will be tried as an adult. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive. Loftis said the teen is a straight-A student at Bryson Middle School and has no history of disciplinary problems.
