Tanya ChamberlainKANSAS CITY, MO – A 14-year-old and 13-year-old boy have been accused of stabbing a woman to death at a car wash before stealing her car and driving around with her corpse propped up in the passenger seat.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on Nov 1, a police officer pulled over a driver he suspected of driving while intoxicated. After the driver pulled into an apartment complex, two young boys jumped out and fled on foot.

The officer gave a short chase before losing sight of them, and then returned to the car. Inside, propped up in the passenger seat, was the dead body of 43-year-old Tanya Chamberlain.

The woman had been stabbed to death, suffering stab wounds to her neck, chest arms and hands. A bloody knife with some of the victim’s hair on it was found in the back seat of the car.

Investigators began checking area surveillance footage and struck gold with cameras at a nearby do-it-yourself car wash. Their surveillance video showed Chamberlain vacuuming her vehicle at the car wash at around 1:14 a.m.

At 1:51 a.m., the two teens can be seen in the area. Five minutes later, the teens can be seen getting into Chamberlain’s car as she sat in the driver’s seat. Two minutes later, after the surveillance video went down to reboot for Daylight Savings Time, the car was gone.

After police released the surveillance footage hoping someone from the public would recognize the teens and identify them, a woman called to say her son recognized them as two boys he went to school with at Bernard C. Campbell Middle School.

The teens, who did not show up to school the day after Chamberlain was murdered, where questioned by police and made recorded statements blaming the other for Chamberlain’s murder.

Both boys were then taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. A judge will determine if they will be charged as adults or juveniles at their next hearing.
