LILBURN, GA – Police say 47-year-old Fikri Erdem slit his 12-year-old disabled son’s throat in a church parking lot then cut himself repeatedly.
At around 9 p.m. Monday, police responding to a 911 call from Erdem who informed them he was parked at the First Baptist Church on Main Street.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found Erdem and his son, Hakan, inside a white pickup truck.
Hakan’s throat had been slashed open with a large kitchen knife, and Erdem was suffering from numerous, self-inflicted cuts to his arms. Harkam was pronounced dead at the scene while Erdem was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center.
Erdem’s wife showed up shortly after EMS had arrived because Erdem had left her a voicemail saying, “I’m sorry. Tell the daughters that this was an accident.”
She told police that Harkam, who has special needs and suffered from cerebral palsy, yelled and screamed a lot and needed constant care. Her husband, she added, had not slept for 10 days.
As of Tuesday, Erdem was still at the hospital, under police guard, with non-life-threatening injuries. Once he is discharged, he will be taken to jail on a charge of malice murder.
A neighbor who has known the family for the last decade said Erdem’s actions do not match the man he saw caring for Harkam almost every day.
